Bomb scare in Karori

Homes in the Wellington suburb of Karori were evacuated while a bomb squad cleared a rusty grenade from a gutter last night. A police cordon blocked the street and some homes along Victory Ave in Karori were evacuated while members of the New Zealand Defence Force’s explosive ordinance disposal team cleared away an old inactive grenade at about 5.30pm. A police spokesman said a member of the public spotted the grenade in a gutter. ‘‘Cordons were put in place and some houses were evacuated.’’ The scene was wrapped up about an hour later.
