Licence suspensions

-

Anyone driving while suspended may be punished by up to three months’ jail, or a fine of $4500. If the driver has two or more previous convictions for that, or for driving while disqualified, the maximum penalty could be up to two years’ jail.

Demerit points are given for all non-speed camera speeding infringements, some traffic offences, breaching driving licence conditions, and for some alcohol-related offences. For instance, using a mobile phone while driving incurs 20 demerit points; failing to display a learner’s L-plate gets 25 points; and unsafe passing gets 35 points.
