Man dies after hit by vehicle

Passers-by tried to save a pedestrian after he was hit by a vehicle near the Kapiti Bowling Club yesterday. The victim, believed to be an elderly man, died about 8am on Matatua Rd, Raumati Beach. A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said the incident triggered a nose-to-tail collision on the road between two drivers as they witnessed the man being hit. The occupants of those vehicles immediately got out and tried to help the victim, he added. A third person stopped and started performing CPR. ‘‘Then the cops arrived ... then the ambos arrived ... I noticed them disconnecting everything, and I thought, ‘oh, he’s gone’.’’
