Shelly Bay plans
Former Property Council president Brent Slater enthuses over the proposed Shelly Bay business and housing development (Letters, July 26).
But the dangers of a congested low-lying road have not been adequately considered. Climate change predicts more storms and sea-level rise which will threaten access.
The plan also ignores public transport needs while car numbers are estimated to increase from 1200 currently to 4700 vehicles per day along a narrow 7.5 metre wide road. More cars means more emissions and air pollution.
Cyclists and many other recreationalists highly value the Miramar Peninsula route. Cyclists will be expected to share the road space with cars and large construction vehicles.
Also, Wellington City Council has promoted Ciclovia along this part of The Great Harbour Way, an event which has attracted thousands of Wellingtonians, enabling children to ride the road safely.
What would be better for the public on its waterfront land? Surely this is a great opportunity to enhance an already popular public space for more to safely enjoy.
The council claims commitment to improve cycling infrastructure and act on climate change. Councillors will vote on the proposal soon. Let’s hope they respect their own policies.
