Chapel’s future

- MICHAEL GIBSON Northland

It is false for the former Property Council president, Brent Slater, to claim that Erskine Chapel has been saved (Letters, July 26). In fact, it has been closed, as an earthquake risk, for several years and a total lack of action by the owner led to serious and worrying damage being done by the earthquake last November.

Mr Slater gives credit to Mr Ian Cassels for saving the chapel in order to support that developer’s proposals for Shelly Bay. He says that ‘‘council officers have done their homework’’ on Shelly Bay. How on earth does he know the views of council officers when these have only been discussed by the council in public-excluded business?

In this respect, I am still trying to obtain the Shelly Bay reports which were considered privately by the council exactly three months ago. Watch this space.
