Showing displeasure

- ALAN ALEXANDER Havelock North

Brendan Bonner’s letter (July 26) on advocacy of the voting option of None of the Above will send shivers up the spine of politicians.

Bonner feels we need to join the other countries where this option is available. Don’t hold your breath.

However, we are equally able to signal voting displeasure with politicians by simply putting a line through all candidates. This then becomes a spoiled vote and is recorded as such. This is the equivalent of NOTA.

A previous correspondent (Letters, June 2, 2014) noted that a good way to push the point home would be to write ‘‘This is a spoiled vote’’ across the ballot paper.
