Bond’s ‘pride dented’ by crash

- CYCLING

Former Olympic rowing champion Hamish Bond says a ‘‘fair amount of skin’’ was lost and his ‘‘pride dented’’ in a crash during a cycle race in the Coromandel.

Bond, who has been pursuing a cycling career after winning two Olympic gold medals, crashed while leading the K2 bike race in the Coromandel and was taken to hospital on Saturday. He was reportedly seen getting into an ambulance after crashing at the 110km mark at the bottom of Kereta Hill.

Bond, who has switched the boat for the bike ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was taken to Thames Hospital and has shared online a photo of his injuries.

‘‘Got myself solo off the front by a couple of min and settling in for a long day but twice came unstuck from the slippery slick roads; second one forcing an end to my day,’’ he said. ‘‘Some limits learnt and fortunately only a fair amount of skin lost and my pride dented.’’
