The editorial (Dec 7) gave much sup­port for the film mu­seum, an­other of the glitzy, glassy above­ground build­ings that you say would help make Welling­ton a ‘‘world-class tourist at­trac­tion’’, bring­ing in un­told dol­lars.

I agree that the coun­cil is ‘‘the guardian of the city’s in­ter­ests’’ and I have a strong pref­er­ence that it makes sure that be­low-ground ne­ces­si­ties are up to the mark and fu­ture-proofed: a wa­ter sup­ply sys­tem with min­i­mal leaks that de­liv­ers suf­fi­cient wa­ter that is safe to drink; and ro­bust sewage and waste­water re­moval sys­tems that are ef­fi­cient and mod­ern, not age­ing and de­grad­ing.
