Trapped in car fire

One person has died after becoming trapped in a car fire near the Central Otago town of Cromwell. Police said five people escaped the vehicle, which rolled over on Tarras-Cromwell Rd, Bendigo, shortly after 3pm yesterday, but one person had become trapped and died. St John paramedics had treated the survivors, who received minor to moderate injuries. Manpreet Farrar, of the Wellington Traffic Operations Centre, said the road between Bendigo Loop Rd and Northburn Station Rd was open to one lane and under traffic management at 6.20pm. The serious crash unit has been notified and will be investigating the cause of the crash.
