Slain officer honoured

A memorial to a police officer killed in the line of duty will also feature the re-naming of part of Porirua police station in his honour.

Today, police will mark the 10-year anniversar­y of the death of Sergeant Derek Wootton, pictured. The

52-year-old policeman was run down by Mongrel Mob member Andrew Popo while he laid out road spikes in Dimock St, Titahi Bay. Popo was jailed for eight years and nine months after pleading guilty to manslaught­er. Today, police and Wootton’s loved ones will attend a memorial service and wreath laying ceremony at the Royal New Zealand Police College. Tonight, part of the Porirua station will be re-named ‘‘The Derek Wootton Loft’’.
