Risky decision for diplomats
The Tenancy Tribunal has caved in to pressure and ruled that diplomats are exempt from being subject to its rules and regulations (July 10). So, it’s ‘‘justice for all’’ as usual – unless of course you are a landlord.
This latest capitulation may bring into play the law of unintended consequences. If the diplomatic core can ‘‘do what it likes’’ with residential tenancies, as they are deemed exempt, so it follows their landlords may treat them as they see fit.
Could six months’ rent as a bond, seven days’ notice by the landlord for breach of the agreement, evictions by old-fashioned methods etc under the commercial rental agreement, come into play? Neville Hart, Island Bay
