Herbs musician dies

-

New Zealand has lost a ‘‘musical genius’’ with the death of Tama Renata. That’s the opinion of John Elliffe, who helps manage legendary Kiwi reggae band Herbs, which the beloved musician was a part of for more than two decades. ‘‘His talents in musical direction, and television musical direction were ahead of his time. Not only did he have impeccable technical capabilities but he had an innate feel for what was required.’’ Renata, who passed away on Sunday evening, was best known for one of the most iconic pieces of Kiwi music. He composed the searing, chilling, electric guitar theme for 1994 film Once Were Warriors.
