Attacker left his mark on Marx’s grave

A vandal has left Karl Marx’s memorial stone damaged beyond repair in a suspected hammer attack on his grave. The marble plaque on his tomb at Highgate Cemetery in north London appears to have been struck repeatedly, destroying much of the lettering. The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust said the grave had been targeted in what looked like ‘‘a deliberate attack on the memory of Karl Marx’’. Ian Dungavell, the trust’s chief executive, said: ‘‘His name has been singled out, although the person wasn’t particular­ly co-ordinated.
