Scrub fire in town belt
The cause of a large scrub fire in the Wellington Town Belt on Saturday is under investigation. The Wadestown fire started just before 4pm and smoke could be seen across much of Wellington. Six fire engines along with rural crews and tankers responded, as well as a helicopter with a monsoon bucket. A firefighter was taken to hospital after twisting his knee on the uneven ground. Police cordoned off Weld St at the height of the blaze. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said police and a rural fire investigator spent yesterday at the scene. Police said the investigation was ongoing and they could not provide any comment on what caused it.
