For Naenae brings warm response

- NICHOLAS BOYACK

A Sikh temple in the heart of Naenae has been warmly welcomed by the community.

The temple, in the old New World building, will be the home for the region’s Sikh community.

To say the temple stands out in the industrial area of Naenae, near two hotels, is a massive understatement.

New World closed in 2014 and the building was empty until it was purchased by the Wellington Sikh Society for $720,000.

After an extensive refurbishment it is expected to open in August with large gold domes imported from India.

A post on the Hutt News Facebook page got 20,000 hits and large numbers of favourable comments.

Mel Williams said: ’’I was disappointed when New World closed but at least the site is going to be used…(it) will bring people into the area who will then see what a beautiful part of the Hutt Valley Naenae is.’’

Mayor Ray Wallace was delighted by the positive response.

‘‘It’s great to see another community facility in Naenae. This reflects the diversity we have here in Lower Hutt and the different cultures living together in harmony.

‘‘I am very pleased that it’s been warmly welcomed by the wider community.’’

Michelle Browning was one of many on Facebook who was enthusiastic

‘‘Wow! I’m looking forward to going to visit. It looks beautiful.’’ Other comments included: * Tiare Murray: It was sad to see New World go but a Sikh temple sounds more beautiful than what I thought was going there.’’

* Sian Robertson: I would love to see a community open day once the temple is finished. It would help integrate the temple into the community.’’

* Shaun Singh Mann: ‘‘Anyone is welcome to a Sikh temple. Free vegetarian meal is available to anyone, especially those in need.’’

* Olivia Bryson: ’’I had no idea the Hutt had a strong Sikh community, but I bet it’ll look beautiful once finished.’’

* Ina Tagata: ‘‘Looks beautiful too. Good luck to them.‘‘

* Hayden Gerrard: ‘‘It’s helping the Sikh community. Seeing as they bought the property, they’re welcome to do what they want with it. And it’s helping a part of the Hutt community that doesn’t have elsewhere to pray.’’
