Time for a laugh as TV series moves to stage

- ABBY BROWN

A stage adaption of the Last of the Summer Wine is coming to the Hutt Repertory Theatre.

Written specifically for the stage, Last of the Summer Wine is every bit as funny as the TV series with the trio of geriatric delinquents, Foggy, Clegg and Compo, in fine form creating a great piece of evening’s entertainment.

This production is directed by Ewen Coleman. It has a wonderful cast of experienced actors who will be familiar to many theatre goers: Michael McBryde as Foggy, Geoff Scrase as Compo, Stephen Falloon as Flasher, Hugh Howie as Gifford, Ruth Sarratt as Nora Batty and Jennifer Cooper as Constance.

First screened in 1973, Last of The Summer Wine was one of the longest running television comedy series when it finally finished in 2010. Viewed by millions over the years, including the Royal Family the writer of all episodes, Roy Clarke has created a wonderful stage adaptation that brings Foggy, Clegg and Compo together for one last time.

The somewhat stern and resolute Nora Batty, the object of Compo’s affections has a niece, Constance. Foggy has come over all amorous and keen to win her affections. She has been the long time fiancee of the hapless Gifford Beaumont who is out and about in the night with every intention of catching a flasher who is roaming loose around the streets.

As Foggy and Clegg attempt to put on a quiet supper for Constance under Nora’s watchful eye, Compo turns up unexpectedly with Gifford and his bugle.

The play runs from August 17-27th at 8pm, there are matinees on August 20 and 21 at 3pm. To book phone 939 7529.
