Family fun dancing together

- ABBY BROWN

A couple who met and fell in love with each other through dancing will be competing in a local dance competition, along with their six-year-old daughter.

Alison and Chris McDermott and their daughter Amelia will be competing at the annual Metropolitan Ballroom and Latin American dance Championships being held in Lower Hutt next month.

Amelia has national dance titles to her name. Dancing with her mum at the nationals last year she won three first, two seconds and two thirds.

Her parents have won national titles too, including the New Vogue National title in the C grade in 2001.

Chris McDermott’s family all danced and he danced with his sister from the age of 12, while his wife started at 16. They met through dancing in 2000 and partnered up in 2001.

While raising children and with Chris McDermott working on his Masters in Marine Ecology they had little time for the sport until last year

The August 6 event will be held at Chilton St James school. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for Gold Card holders and under 18s, can be bought at the door. The doors open at 11am and the first dance will be an hour later.
