Rare seaside gem for sale at Days Bay

- MATT STEWART

It’s got a home cinema, five bedrooms and sweeping views of Wellington Harbour – and you’ll need nearly $2 million before you even think about making an offer for it.

Houses in the Lower Hutt seaside suburb of Days Bay don’t come up for sale too often, and when they do buyer interest is fierce.

The palatial homestead in Korimako Rd is thought to have been built in the 1920s for the Evans family, who owned the Wellington drapery firm.

It had become rundown by the time the present owners bought the home. In 1998 they virtually rebuilt it, starting with new foundations, a completely renovated interior, and adding decking and garage space.

The home has access to the beach via a track and also features five living areas, a separate study and four bathrooms.

With inquiries starting at $1,895,000, vending agent Kim Slessor said the house was attracting interest from all directions, including Wellington, Auckland and overseas.

Eastbourne and its bays were undergoing the same booming market as the rest of Wellington, and Slessor said demand was outstripping supply.

Between March and August 2016, the Real Estate Institute reported 63 sales in the area, 12 of them above $1m. For the same period last year there were 53 sales, only three of them above $1m, meaning the average price for the 2016 sales jumped by about 20 per cent.

‘‘My family emigrated to Days Bay from the UK 20 years ago, and we still pinch ourselves regularly for landing in such a dream location,’’ Slessor said.
