Avalon Park is 6 hectares of outdoor heaven with its great paths and its revamped playground.

After $3.7 million was invested in doing up the tired playground, its new found popularity has overwhelmed the reserves manager. (see page 5). Over the gloriously, sunny Labour Weekend thousands of children and their families flocked to use it. Mums say that even when it’s raining the kids want to go after school. It’s been so popular there has been pressure on the toilet facilities, but there is money in the budget to address that.

But the wider area of the park hasn’t been such fun for Val Jenness. In our story on page 1 she tells how she is the victim of a change of rules, making it difficult to walk her dog in the park. Recent signs have gone up banning dogs from all but the northern end of the park and Jenness, who has a back injury, prefers to walk on the concrete tracks at the southern end.

The park is big enough for all to enjoy. It’s time to be sensible and have another look at the the dogfree bylaw.
