What’s happening to the Hutt’s traffic?
Last week was a tough week for commuters from the Hutt with breakdowns, accidents and general congestion slowing the traffic. We asked you on Neighbourly if you thought traffic was getting worse and what could be done about it.
Common problems that people found were limited space for cars and trucks breaking down to pull over and issues with public transport. The Petone interchange was specifically highlighted as an area of concern for some drivers. motorcycles we would not have this problem. What is it driving into town, one person each car? Also the motorway design is flawed, there is no room for a broken vehicle to pull into.
LUKE FEENSTRA, TIROHANGA
High time for the Petone to Grenada road to be constructed, there needs to be another road option between the Hutt and Wellington. Can’t understand why these decisions need to take so long. Get on and build the thing already.
BRIAN JONES, MANOR PARK
The elephant in the room is the way that SH2 has been turned into a roofless tunnel between Petone and Ngauranga. You cannot turn off, pull over or go back. It used to be possible to turn northbound into one lane, and divert traffic southound into a northbound lane - but a wall had to be built to stop NZ hoons killing people by crossing the median. Now we all pay.
MIKE HENDERSON, EASTBOURNE
Traffic is getting worse. There needs to be a rethink on the SH2 bottleneck as It’s the only way in and out of the Hutt.
JONATHAN GRAHAM, WAINUIOMATA
It is all the points raised in previous comments. It is not one single factor but there needs to be a mix of changes from motorists and those policing and managing the system. Motorists should car pool if possible, drive sensibly and reduce accidents by good driving practice. The public transport system is improving but could be better. The Petone interchange needs attention and money spent on it. In the event of accidents, police and transport need to put restoring traffic flow as their top priority, not just blocking a lane in a pointless fashion as I observed last Monday. Employers should consider encouraging staff working in Wellington to work from home one day a week if possible. All of these things, together, would make a difference. These is no one single perfect solution.
