Principal drawn by school’s fine traditions

-

Nearly two years ago Kathy Lloyd-Parker arrived in Lower Hutt from Auckland and started her principal position at Chilton Saint James. Since then she has found much to love about the Hutt Valley and Wellington. This week she took some time out to talk about them.

WHERE DO YOU GO FOR A NIGHT OUT?

Wellington has so much to offer culturally. I go to a concert, the stadium to watch sport, various movie theatres, Circa to see drama productions and various venues when Wellington puts on a jazz festival, film festival or of course WOW. I also enjoy the wide variety of restaurants the city has to offer.

IF YOU WERE A PUPIL AT YOUR SCHOOL TODAY, WHAT WOULD YOU LOVE ABOUT IT?

The strong sense of community and focus on giving to others. The excellent education that not only helps girls achieve highly academically but also focuses on them being good citizens. The chance to experience an international qualification through Cambridge International Examinations that could take a girl anywhere in the world. The opportunity to experience a wide range of extracurricular activities from sport, music, drama, art, social service, dance and so much more. It is a school that is constantly evolving and therefore it is an exciting educational environment. Recently a new ballet academy and golf academy has been created. To experience genuine care and concern for the wellbeing of everyone in its care

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE HUTT VALLEY?

It is a small community not far from the CBD with all the community spirit of a small place but with access to the city. There are lovely restaurants, good schools and many fine people who work together for the good of all. It is friendly.

WHAT DREWYOU TO WORKING AT SCHOOLS?

It should be ‘‘what drew me to working at Chilton?’’ because I came all the way from Auckland to be here. I appreciate the tradition of Chilton as it has 100 years of fine achievement. I appreciate intellectual endeavour and enjoy the process of learning. I like to be in a school where girls are valued and education is regarded highly - a school that promotes girls to be the best they can and has strong standards. I consider it important to provide in schools a safety for all girls to be who they are – their unique selves. In a school like Chilton, we celebrate success. It is a privilege to work in a school and help grow the future citizens of New Zealand. It is an honour to work with fine teachers and to know the families of our girls as well as daily enjoy the progress our girls make.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I do not get a lot of spare time but when I do I aman avid reader. I read every day for pleasure. I am a strong theatre goer, enjoy live music and sharing time with friends and family. I even enjoy motor racing and rugby. Another pleasure is catching up with past students – always a joy.
