Rylee jumps into the record books

A Wellington centre age group record for 11-year-old Rylee Watt was the highlight for Lower Hutt athletes at the recent Wellington children’s championsh­ips.

Rylee set a new centre record in the grade 11 girls long jump with her 4.82 metre effort.

The jump, which would also have won the 12 girls competitio­n, gave her a 10cm victory in the 11 girls competitio­n. Rylee also showed her versatilit­y by winning the shot put and placing second in both the discus and 100 metres events.

Rylee was one of a big group of local athletes to make the medal podium over the two championsh­ip weekends.

* The most frequent was 10-year-old Alexander Prichard, who won six individual medals, including a 400 metres gold, as well as being part of the gold medal-winning Lower Hutt medley relay team.

Khya Wilson, 14, showed his talent as a sprinter and jumper. He won four gold medals, in the the 100 and 200 metres sprints, the long jump and the high jump. He also took bronze in the discus in his grade.

up his double gold medalwinni­ng performanc­e from the Colgate Games in winning the 100 metres and 200 metres events and added a long jump first and a shot put second to his haul.

In the 12 boys grade, Rufus Rusholme-Cobb was a double success in throws events, winning the discus and shot put while adding a bronze medal in high jump.

Other Lower Hutt winners included Sophia Hardie (12 girls 100m), Jade Matthews-Wanden (13 girls 80m hurdles), Danielle Currie (11 girls high jump), Mikayla Sola (10 girls shot put), Billie Va’a (9 girls discus), Will Ashton (8 boys 60m), Aubrey Chunga (8 boys long jump), Jack Howat (15 boys shot put).

Eight Lower Hutt athletes have earned selection in a 44-strong Wellington team to compete at the New Zealand grade 12/13 interprovi­ncial teams event in Masterton at Easter.

Those selected are Sophia Hardie, Sharon Kennedy (12 girls), Oliver Krynen, Arikirangi Tongia (12 boys), Jade MatthewsWa­nden, Sarah Tustin, Samantha Woolley and Jorja Watt (13 girls).
