Boulcott’s Farm storms to win
A storming finish in the afternoon singles matches saw Boulcott’s Farm Heritage reverse last year’s final defeat to Manor Park in Wellington Golf’s women’s Lansdowne Trophy.
With captain Alanah Braybrook one of four winners for Boulcott’s Farm in the six singles matches, the Lower Hutt club beat Manor Park 5.5-3.5 in the decider at Royal Wellington on Saturday.
The six-woman final was locked up at the lunch break after Boulcott’s Annemarie Verster and Sue Faulke halved with Manor Park’s Imogen DonnellyLawrence and Judy Randell in the foursomes.
Randell then beat Faulke in the No 6 singles match to raise hope for Manor Park before Michelle Huang, Verster, Braybrook and Shontalia William all stormed to victories for Boulcott’s.
Verster’s 4 and 2 win over the experienced Jennie Hewett was a key factor while Braybrook was decisive against DonnellyLawrence, winning 5 and 4.
Wellington’s top woman golfer Gabrielle Palado won the No 1 match 2-up over fellow rep Erika Cui but it was too late for Manor Park by then.
In the men’s Duncan Cup final, Shandon ended a dominant season with a 9.5-5.5 victory over Royal Wellington.
Shandon’s only defeat in winning the Otaki Cup round robin was 8-7 to Royal Wellington but there was no repeat at Boulcott’s Farm as they flew out of the blocks in the morning.
By lunchtime Shandon were 5-0 up after sweeping the foursomes, with captain Matt Pegg and Ryan Fahey having the biggest margin 5 and 3 over Royal Wellington’s Jordan Loof and Daniel Dexter.
Royal started well after the interval with victories to Aaron Leech and Sam Clemens at the bottom of the order, but victories to Justin Turnbull, Fasi Tuulima and Jonny Dittmer were enough to clinch it for Shandon.
Dittmer, who beat Zabe Orchard 4 and 3 in the No 3 match, completed an unbeaten season in the singles.
Dexter ended Fahey’s unbeaten season with a 4 and 3 win while Brayden Mazey (2 and 1 over Richard Pegg) grabbed the other consolation win for Royal Wellington as Josef Edge and Loof halved the No 1 match.
It was back-to-back finals defeats for Royal Wellington after they were pipped by Paraparaumu Beach last year.
