The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Getting there:

-

Kawau is about eight kilometres off the coast of Matakana. Many ferries leave from Sandspit Wharf. The trip takes about 20 minutes, depending on the destination. Despite their best attempts, the operators are unable to control the weather, so keep in mind that the trip can be a little bumpy.

One of the great things about Kawau is that the adventure begins before leaving the mainland. For many, the boat journey is a new experience, and even a highlight of the trip. Kawau Cruises has boats – big and small – to suit the pace of the traveller, be it a high-speed commute or a leisurely cruise. Have a day to spare? Jump on board the Royal Mail Run cruise, the largest water mail run in the Southern Hemisphere, and spend time exploring the rugged coastline of the island. There is the option of a barbecue lunch on board, or a BYO picnic basket to enjoy in the grounds of Mansion House.

Kawau Cruises water taxis also service other islands in the Hauraki Gulf so, if you want to explore secret beaches further afield, give the company a call to arrange.

The trips leave from Sandspit Wharf and it pays to be there about 30 minutes before departure. There is parking available at the wharf. Bookings are essential and departure times depend on the season, so check the timetable first. (09) 425 8006 or 0800 111 616 kawauwatertaxis.co.nz
