The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Tawharanui

-

When entering Tawharanui Regional Park you need to pass through a tall, intimidating predator-proof fence. Kids will have wonderful theories about the creatures being contained or kept out by these formidable barriers. There may not be dinosaurs or other mythical beasts, but there are some precious inhabitants including kiwi, saddleback, North Island robin and kaka, plus farm animals. Walking tracks and mountain-biking trails along the peninsula offer views over the clear waters of the marine reserve, where the bountiful sea life provides plenty of excitement for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. For those who seek a slower pace, there are beaches perfect for picnics, swimming, sunbathing and watching the surfers when the wind is coming from the right direction.

Tawharanui is still relatively unknown (even to Aucklanders), despite it being one of the region’s most beautiful parks. However, during summer, expect to share the beach with many others who thought Tawharanui was their secret spot. There is a tent-only campsite and an all-modes campsite which has overnight accommodation for a small fee. Tawharanui Regional Park is around 20 minutes from Matakana and 80 minutes from Auckland.

Head north through Matakana, turn right into Takatu Road then keep going straight. More information:
