The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
The Hen & Chicken Islands
The Hen and Chicken islands are a paradise for flora and fauna both above and below the rolling water.
The landmark is composed of seven islands, plus a stack called Sail Rock, and is known for excellent diving.
The islands are all wildlife refuges – Mauitaha and Araara are sanctuaries for the kiore (Polynesian rat), which is more often eradicated from islands than homed, as well as a breeding ground for Pycroft’s petrel, and home to tuatara. In the late 1800s Taranga, or Hen Island, was the only remaining habitat of the North Island saddleback, which has since been reintroduced in other areas. While its possible to fish the islands (although check the weather as they’re located 12km east of Bream Head – a long way in rough weather), landing is not permitted.
