The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

1. The Martha Mine Pit Rim Walkway

-

While many visitors are aware that the Martha mine open pit is near town, they may not be aware just how near it is. It's right there – just up that path off Seddon Street, literally metres from the main road and local dairy. The mammoth pit is closed due to slips, but is still a favourite attraction for visitors. There's a 4km Pit Rim Walkway that guides walkers around the edge of the pit and through a changing landscape of historic remnants, replantings and machinery, all of which gives an idea of just how immense this entire operation is. Look for the subsidence area “where the house fell in the hole”, and see the 777 dumptruck, which may blow the minds of young machinery enthusiasts. Their toy tractor and digger will never look the same.

Find the walkway opposite the Gold Discovery Centre, and next to the Cornish Pumphouse.
