The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
4. The Cornish Pumphouse
This was once used to house steam engines and machinery that pumped water from the underground mines to the surface at a rate of 7000L per minute, where it would flow down the main streets of Waihi.
Built in 1904, it was kept in working order through the introduction of electricity in 1913 until 1929 (the miners never truly trusted electricity, so kept a backup plan). It's now a Waihi landmark, a slightly spooky structure that sits just below the pit lookout on Seddon Street (opposite the Gold Discovery Centre).
