4. The Cornish Pumphouse

This was once used to house steam engines and machinery that pumped water from the undergroun­d mines to the surface at a rate of 7000L per minute, where it would flow down the main streets of Waihi.

Built in 1904, it was kept in working order through the introducti­on of electricit­y in 1913 until 1929 (the miners never truly trusted electricit­y, so kept a backup plan). It's now a Waihi landmark, a slightly spooky structure that sits just below the pit lookout on Seddon Street (opposite the Gold Discovery Centre).
