The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
HANgi for a cause
Karleen Marshall is the principal of Te Wainui a Rua primary school on the Whanganui
River. It has approximately 30 pupils – all Maori – and there’s not a huge capacity for local fundraising. But Karleen decided she wanted her students to have access to the same trips as wealthier city schools so she came up with the idea of selling hangi food at the River Traders Market. The pupils help with the preparation before the hangi is put down on Fridays. The popular $10 packs include mutton, pork, chicken, kumara, spuds, carrots, silverbeet and stuffing.
