Lonely Planet reckons this place has the best burgers in the North Island. Who could argue? Charlotte Melser, who runs the business, says just over a year ago the seaside suburb of Castlecliff was showing signs of neglect. A group of people decided to create a focus for the community, where locals and visitors could meet and eat. The name was chosen because it means a hub of a community. “We wanted to create a place that brings people together, and which also lifts the profile of Castlecliff.” Charlotte has worked in hospitality for 16 years. When she chose the menu, she focused on burgers, “because everyone loves them”. On Sundays during summer months, there is music provided by a bunch of vinyl DJs.
The Citadel is a 10-minute drive from the city centre. There’s a great children’s playground on-site and some awesome local art on the walls. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. 14A Rangiora Street. (06) 344 7076, on Facebook.
