The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
The Rutland Arms Inn
In the late 19th century, the Rutland was known as a place to “dally and do business”. Nothing has changed. The grand hotel, built in 1847, is still popular as a place to eat, drink and talk shop.
In 1986, it was nearly demolished but two local businessmen rescued and restored it to its former glory. The dining room and bar are festooned with old horse brasses, harnesses and historic photos. Giant beams criss-cross the ceiling, and the polished floorboards are imprinted with more than a century of scuff marks. The large suites are named after Whanganui’s gentry. The period furniture – including a bath chair in the hall – is in keeping with the hotel’s venerable history.
Tavis and Jenn Small have owned the building for 8 years and both have degrees in hospitality, but they also have a knack for good old Kiwi friendliness – and Tavis makes a mean espresso.
