The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Kaka Point

-

This sleepy seaside spot, a 15-minute drive from Balclutha, has a great beach for walking, swimming and surfing and is the ideal spot in which to pick up the relaxed vibe of the Catlins. It was home to Hone Tuwhare, noted NZ poet, who won over local farmers and kids alike. His honorary doctorate hangs in the local pub and his humble crib was restored in honour of his influence as an individual and as a loved member of this community.

The road out of town hugs idyllic bays and leads to the landmark beacon of Nugget Point at the southern end of the bay. Here the 150-year-old lighthouse is perched on the headland as a proud symbol of Kaka Point. With nothing but the big southern ocean beyond, it’s a perfect introduction to the remoteness of this part of the country.
