The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Catlins Kayak and Adventure
As a third-generation local born into a family of fishermen, Jared Anderson has saltwater in his veins, especially having surfed and dived these local waters since childhood. Anderson has put these sea skills and knowledge to good use, guiding kayak tours around Nugget Point, normally viewed from the popular walk 70m above sea level. Being amongst the rocky outcrops on the water’s surface adds a unique perspective including 180-degree views north and south along the dramatic coastline. Exploring this area by kayak also allows a closer interaction with the resident fur seals and seabirds such as spoonbills, gannets and shags that call this striking headland home. Anderson also says the possibility of being buzzed by a low-flying albatross can make people’s day.
