Desperate to find something to get her out of the house after her first child was born, Louise Thompson stumbled across beekeeping. It proved a good match and the Kaka Point local now runs a small commercial operation with 300 hives on local farms producing clover and kamahi honey. With short summers and a colder coastal climate, honey production in this part of the country can be challenging, which makes Kaka Point honey even more special.
