The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Always wondered what it feels like to fly? At ZipTrek Ecotours you can extend your own wings and whoop with whatever sound happens to come out when flying through the trees from treehouse to treehouse.

ZipTrek Ecotours have been sending customers whizzing from suspended ziplines for almost 10 years. The Kereru Drop is a recent addition, and involves flying through the douglas fir forest on two ziplines, and finishing with the newly constructed 21m fall onto a padded platform below. Not ready for a head-first bungee jump? This is as simple as placing one's feet over the kereru's foot marks and just… jumping. A leap of faith is still needed, but somehow it seems like an easier option than jumping head first into a canyon with rushing waters and rocks below.

The tour is both fun and educational – even that final jump mimics the drunk kereru falling off its branch after gorging on too much fermenting fruit. The base is located near the Skyline complex at the top of the gondola, or more energetic types can leave an hour earlier and walk up. (03) 441 2102, ziptrek.co.nz
