Dress up, rev the engine and turn up the golden oldies; Whangamata rocks and rolls during this 5-day celebratio­n of everything 50s and 60s. 100,000 people were estimated to have attended in 2018, so needless to say it's important to plan attendance well in advance. beachhop.co.nz

Whanga Week, Whangamata, 27 December 2018-2 January 2019. This coastal town is never more alive than during the holiday period. The events of Whanga Week are designed to get Christmas ham-stuffed visitors off the deckchair and onto the beach, with fun runs and swims, surf boat displays and, of course, Miss Whangamata. Waihi Beach Summer Fair, Wilson Park, Waihi Beach, 5 January 2019. The summer fair is the largest event to take place in Waihi Beach with over 200 stalls to be enjoyed by shoppers, diners, buyers, sellers and wanderers. Prepare for an overload of crafts, foods, games and entertainm­ent. waihibeach­summerfair.com

Waihi Beach Sunday Market, Wilson Road, 9am-1pm. This friendly little market draws in creators, producers and growers from the surroundin­g Bay of Plenty. The seasonal produce is as fresh as can be, especially the locally grown kiwifruit and avocados. Held every Sunday from Labour weekend to Easter. On Facebook.
