The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Waihi Golf Club
Mark Twain is credited with the saying “golf is a good walk spoiled”, and while the Waihi Golf Club was never on his radar the course fits his sentiments. It is a good walk, uphill and down dale, and there exist plenty of opportunities to spoil one's scorecard, yet it's also a course that's deeply satisfying to play. The par 72 course measures 5685 metres and there's a good workout to be had by carrying clubs or pulling/pushing a trundler around it – or rent a motorised cart from the onsite pro shop. The elevated tees provide great launching pads. After a round take time to enjoy the surroundings from the spacious upstairs clubrooms, which are also available for conferences, weddings and family functions. The golf club staff pride themselves on their friendliness and visitors are assured of a warm welcome. Travelers can park up overnight and a small fee of $15 provides access to power and shower and toilet facilities (reservations are advised). Green fees: $35 (NZ affiliate), $40 (non-affiliate). Green fee players are welcome, tee bookings are recommended. 113 Woodlands Road, Waihi. (07) 863 8678, waihigolf.co.nz
