The Insider's Guide to New Zealand

Laughing Pottery

-

A piece purchased from Laughing Pottery isn't just a bowl, cup or plate, but a memory of a time and place. Chances are, the buyer stopped in and was captivated by the rather hypnotic skills of potter Andrew Killick and his apprentice Holly Morgan, who are often found bent over the wheel elbow-deep in clay, or putting finishing touches on a new creation in the store-cum-studio, gallery and workshop. It's a one-stop shop for lovers of art – not only does Andrew make and sell his pieces but he also stocks pottery necessities and showcases art from other local artists. Many pieces of pottery created and sold at Laughing Pottery have a piece of sand from Waihi Beach, and some are crafted with clay from the nearby mines, sourced from hundreds of metres below ground. It doesn't get more local than that. 18 Rosemont Road, Waihi.
