The Insider's Guide to New Zealand
Underworld Adventures
The taonga of Charleston lies hidden beneath a cloak of forest, rock and ridges deeply buried in the dramatic West
Coast limestone. A network of caves, carved out of soft limestone over 200,000 years, runs underground following paths of the dark rivers and forming intricately complex systems. Locals had explored these mazes for years, but it wasn't until 1989 that Underworld Adventures began with a plan, passion and a few wetsuits.
“Caving is the last frontier of exploration,” says manager Mira Schwill. “There's something about going underground, sharing the first light, the first breath, placing the first footprint. There's so much unseen beauty within the caves.” There are four different experiences that each offer a glimpse into the ancient underground world. The Nile River Rainforest Train takes you into the beautiful rainforest-covered limestone valley. The Glow-worm Cave Tour offers an explore by foot of the dry part of the cave catching a magnificent view of the glow-worms. Underworld Rafting takes you a bit deeper with a fun combination of cave exploration and blackwater rafting. Adventure Caving includes a heart-thumping combination of abseiling, caving and climbing.
A decent level of fitness is required for the more physical tours, and there are age restrictions. If evidence is needed for naysayers back home, photos are provided. State Highway 6, Charleston. (03) 788 8168, caverafting.com
