Nelson family eyes Japan move

- SARA MEIJ

Anna and Roger Wilde are about to embark on a new journey that will take them to Japan.

The Nelson couple is heading to Kyoto with their two sons in three weeks time.

Anna said the the fact that they both have a connection with the country made the decision easier.

She said Roger spent four years in the Bukkokuji temple near the city of Obama in Japan in his 20s and she was a Shiatsu practitioner for 10 years.

Anna said they had recently bought a house in Nelson and were quite happy with the idea of settling, but didn’t have to think long about the chance to move abroad for a couple of years.

‘‘We’ve always thought it would be fun to have a family adventure, and expand our awareness of this amazing world together.’’

Anna said she got a part time job as an assistant teacher at a school and Roger got a job as an early childhood teacher. She said they’ll be living in Japan for two years. ‘‘It feels like the right amount of time to go.’’

‘‘The kids will be close to going to intermediate school when we come back.’’

Anna said her son Gabriel was looking forward to the food in Japan the most.

‘‘I’m pretty excited about the food too, and the pockets of beauty, the gardens and temples.’’

Anna said that one of the things they’ll have to get used to is living in a city of roughly 1.5 million people.

‘‘We know some things will drive us crazy and not everything will be easy.’’

Anna has been running a hypno-birthing business in Nelson for the past six years.

‘‘I’ll definitely miss that face-toface contact with the community.’’

‘‘It’s sad to say goodbye to teaching the classes but also to all of our friends and family.’’

The Wildes also wrote a popular cooking book.

The family is looking forward to returning to Nelson.
