Nelson Motocross Champs

There will be plenty of thrills and spills near Wakefield this weekend.

Nelson’s premier motocross racing this weekend offers big jumps for riders and close viewing for spectators.

Hosted by the Nelson Motorcycle Club the MTF Finance Nelson Motocross Championsh­ips will see riders across 14 classes racing over two-days.

Saturday will see three rounds of racing across the classes. A best whip competitio­n was planned for lunchtime entertainm­ent.

Sunday features two rounds of racing and the dash for cash – a one-lap knock out competitio­n involving the top 20 senior and junior riders with prize money up for grabs.

The track has been reversed for the weekend’s racing and promises laps featuring 160-metres in the air as riders launch from several 30-metre jumps.

More than 110 entries have been received by organisers. Look for Nelson’s Hayden Wilkinson and Motueka’s Josh Coppins in MX1, Motueka’s Jamie Voight in MX2, Bryan Heaphy NZ1 in the Vets 35-44yrs, Darryl Adlam of Nelson in the Vets 45+, Nic D’Arcy in the National 125, Hayz Shuttlewor­th on the Junior 125, the very fast Grason Veitch from Dunedin in the Junior 250, Christchur­ch’s Kobe Thoms in the Junior 85 and a dozen entries in the ladies class – including Timaru’s Kimberley Murphy.
