We did it! Wasp Wipeout hits target

- JONATHAN CARSON

The Wasp Wipeout project has hit its funding target, providing a $50,000 boost to wasp control operations across the Nelson region.

Supporters of the crowdfunding campaign have so far contributed $50,680 since Wasp Wipeout was launched in December.

The goal at the outset was $50,000.

The funding will support the Department of Conservation and other conservation groups to undertake wasp control operations across the region over the coming weeks.

Nelson regional editor Victoria Guild said the response to the campaign had been fantastic.

‘‘We’ve had so much support from the community and businesses. The stories that we have done have raised a huge awareness of the wasp problem in our region and it is heartening to see people out there wanting to tackle it.’’

Guild said people had signed up to volunteer to help, and others had contributed from $20 up to $1000 in some cases.

‘‘Reaching the target means we can do those projects on our wish list and be well set up for the years ahead.

‘‘Because of the community support, I’m confident we will be able to attract funding for Wasp Wipeout for the next few years.

‘‘It might be one small step, but it has kickstarted a movement to be rid of them for good.’’

DOC Operations Manager Chris Golding said the funding would assist with protecting native biodiversity and the public from invasive wasps.

He said Wasp Wipeout was a unique project that had captured community’s attention.

‘‘You don’t have to go too far to find someone who doesn’t like wasps.

‘‘There aren’t too many positive things about them.’’
