Cancer Society Nelson centre manager Michelle Hunt said the ceremony was a way for people to remember loved ones who were cancer survivors as well as those lost to the disease.

She said the fact the pipe bands were playing added ‘‘a real atmosphere’’ and it was ‘‘very touching.’’

Cancer Society Nelson chairperson Alison McAlpine welcomed those in attendance and Nelson Tasman Hospice chaplain David Moynan led the service.

Hunt said at the Relay for Life people had bought candle bags to decorate for whoever they were walking for. Those bags were collected at the end and cremated, for the ashes to be scattered during last week’s gathering, returning them ‘‘back to the ground’’.

She said Relay for Life was an important fundraising event for the Cancer Society Nelson, last year bringing in $105,000.

‘‘We don’t get any government funding so we’re totally relying on Nelsonians to support us.’’

Next year the event was going to be held at a different location – at Nelson Airport.

‘‘It’s going to be more family fun focussed and will have a food night market,’’ Hunt said.

‘‘It’ll be more like a fair and festival but we will keep the ceremonial aspect of it.’’ Age: 59
