The Leader Nelson edition

NAME: BRUCE NELSON

-

Age: 56.

How long have you been mentoring: Four years.

How I got into it: A friend of mine was working at BBBS at the time and she introduced me to it.

Who I mentor / My Little Sister /Brother: Caleb, he has moved away just recently but we still keep in touch and he is doing well.

I was inspired by: I had a few mentors when I was growing up, not official ones, just guys in the neighbourhood who looked after me and spent time with me. And I also had great parents, our door was always open to people that needed a hand and that has stuck with me.

It helps if you can: Be open to what your Little Brother or Sister is interested in and be willing to do the things they like to do.

Things we do together: We rarely had a plan but never got bored. Sometimes it was a big adventure and other times it was just hanging out. More times than not it ended with us getting wet and or muddy.

Best tip: Be in it for the long haul. It takes time to develop a relationship and not everything will go smoothly but sticking with it can make all the difference.

Heart-warming moment: There are heaps of them too many to list and more to come I think.

This is /isn’t for you if: This is for you if you are not quite over being a kid yourself.
