Artists join to celebrate links

-

The Links exhibition is a celebration of sisterhood and shared artistic endeavour.

Each of the five graduates, four from NMIT 10 years ago and the fifth from The Learning Connexion in Wellington in 2016, depicts links of different sorts in their work, links to the past, to nature, to the landscape, to the objects we use every day or to aspects of her inner self.

LeeAnn Dixon paints on recycled objects, mostly trays, as a connection to her past and a portrayal of natural objects in the present. Her use of trays came from seeing her late mother’s collection of ‘‘important’’ treasures in her china cabinet.

Lynette Cain creates in glass, using, the lost wax method of glass casting. With the many variants involved in this process, and careful hand finishing, each piece ends up being individual with its own distinctive visual and tactile qualities.

Jane Sussmilch works in two different styles, abstraction and realism with realist works developed using digital media, then painted up by hand. Abstract works are usually more expressive and freeflowing.

Although she works in two very different styles her work is linked through expressing different traits and aspects of her nature.

Carol Hargadon’s work has become more abstract in style over the last few years.

She enjoys the freedom it gives her to experiment and push boundaries. In Links she has used a mixture of media with vibrant colouring to depict land, sea and sky scapes.

Working as a botanist has given Cathy Jones a love for our native plants, recognising the links within and between ecosystems. Her works depict figures, plants and the landscapes within which we all live.

She hopes to encourage people to see the beauty of the plants and, sometimes, their amazing quirkiness, linking delight in them to a concern for their fate.

The exhibition will be held at the McKee Gallery in the Suter Gallery. The opening to which all are invited, is at 5.30 pm on Wednesday 29 March. Viewing between 9.30 and 4.30 daily from 30 March to 16 April.
