Neighbours get ready for Maitai clean up

- SARA MEIJ

Nelsonians are getting ready to pitch in for the Great Community Clean Up.

The event ran for the first time last year and this time around Maitai Valley Road is the focus of attention.

Organiser Martin Love said the idea to clean up the road came from biking in the area frequently.

‘‘I bike up there quite a lot, have looked at [the rubbish] for years and never got around to do anything about it.’’

He said it would be good to work alongside people who have a shared interest in making the community clean of rubbish.

‘‘If you do it by yourself it’s not as rewarding.’’

The Maitai Valley Rd project was the only one organised through the Great Community Clean Up project so far.

The team will start at Branford Park just before 10am on Saturday, April 29 and the event runs until noon.

Love said the idea was to pick up everything from both sides of the road up to the end of the tar sealed section past the Maitai Motor Camp.

He said anyone wanting to help should bring a high visibility vest and a coat in case of wet weather, a drink bottle and snacks as well as sturdy footwear.

‘‘I’ll get some black plastic rubbish bags. We may need a driver for the car, I can bring a trailer and will sort out transport and shuttles where they are needed on the day.

‘‘Bicycles could be useful if you prefer. I will bring a first aid kit. Mobile phones only work part way up the valley.’’

The Great Community Clean Up is a nationwide event by Neighbourly and The Warehouse, which runs from April 27 to May 3.

It’s designed to unite neighbours and inspire them to take ownership of their neighbourhoods through cleaning up areas that need a little extra attention.

All groups that register before April 21 will receive a welcome pack including gloves, rubbish bags, hand sanitiser, a welcome sheet and a $10 Warehouse gift card.
