Call for port race marshalls
More flag marshalls are needed to ensure the starter’s flag drops at the region’s last surviving street race next January.
The annual Port Nelson Street Races, which are organised by the Nelson Road Racing Association, typically draws around 100 riders and crowds of around 3000.
Head marshall Andrew Bunker said training for those interested in becoming a qualified marshall will be held at the Nelson Suburban Club on May 27 from 9am, with lunch provided.
‘‘I’ve currently got a handful of qualified marshalls confirmed for the day and I need to increase that number.’’
The training provides Motorcycling New Zealand accreditation and allows newlyminted marshalls to volunteer at any MNZ-sanctioned event in the country, Bunker said.
Volunteers could chose to train purely in flag marshalling, or compete stage one of MNZ’s offic- ial’s training, which put them on the ladder to becoming a qualified race official, he said.
‘‘It also gets you as close as you can to motorcycle racing without being on a bike.’’
Marshalls volunteering for the day would get a free race T-shirt, a packed lunch and a free evening meal at the riders’ prize giving.
