Big win for cheerleaders

- SARA MEIJ

Motueka High’s Intensity-Golden Girls cheerleading team came away with a win at the Wellington Cheerleading competition.

Coach Oakley Salton said the team placed first in the level 2 division of the Ministry of Cheer competition over the weekend.

Salton said they took two stunt teams to the competition, and the second one, Intensity-Xtreme placed third in the level 3 stunt group division.

The stunt group category involves cheerleaders moving through a variety of stunts in which they get marked on their variety, execution and technique.

Ministry of Cheer is an one day event in which club, university and school teams compete.

Salton said Motueka High were the only school team competing in the stunt group competition for level 2 and 3.

She said it was the team’s third time competing competitively since it became competitive in the sport in April last year.

Salton said she was ‘‘hugely proud of the progress the team has made and the commitment these athletes demonstrate each week’’.

She said the wins at this tournament meant the stunt groups had qualified for the New Zealand Cheerleading Nationals in October.

‘‘They will also be entering their team performance which includes every aspect of cheerleading.’’
