A day full of helpful information
Nelson Police and Te Korowai Trust are holding a community information day where people can get access to health, social support and road safety services.
The free event is taking place at Annesbrook Church to make people aware of the services and support available in the community.
Senior sergeant Grant Andrews said the open day was an opportunity for people no matter their age to learn about things that could benefit them and make a positive difference to their daily lives.
‘‘We are here to help along with our community partners to provide assistance on the day.’’
Te Korowai’s Betty Soane said the event was open to everyone.
‘‘Not everyone knows where to go for help, so we hope this is a stepping stone for them to seek support.’’
Police, Ride to Live and ACC Ride Forever programme presenters, along with driving instructor Kevin Bannan will be there to explain where to go for driver and rider training and how the graduated licence system works, including how to avoid getting fines, demerit points and what to do to get your licence back.
Age Concern will conduct checks for the elderly to ensure their vehicles are set up correctly for them to drive safely. Bookings can be made through Age Concern on 544 7624 or turn up on the day.
Plunket will demonstrate a driveway safety kit designed to prevent children being injured by reversing vehicles, while Te Korowai staff will outline their car seat for hire scheme and explain the importance of budgeting for things like vehicle registration, warrant of fitness, running costs and insurance.
Nelson Technical Institute staff will explain the employment opportunities arising from obtaining, for example, their HT licences and the courses avail- able to do the training.
There will be a heavy truck present to demonstrate what is required on the day.
Workstar staff will be present offering employment support services for people with barriers to employment.
They may also be able to assist with funding for people to obtain heavy trade licences and security guard licences for example.
Neighbourhood Support will provide information on how to make your home and neighbourhood a safer place.
Youth Service TasmanNelson will be present to provide a free service for 16 and 17 year olds.
Nelson nurses complete with a new field emergency tent will be on hand to conduct free basic health tests, including blood pressure checks.
There will be advice and assistance on domestic violence, healthy cooking and nutrition and the benefits of exercise.
Community Information Day at Annesbrook Church Hall on Saxton Road in Stoke on September 21 from 10am to 2pm. Admission, services and food is free.
