Penny, and her husband John began establishing the garden at Flaxmere, North Canterbury over 50 years ago.
Situated at 1000 feet above sea level tall trees hugged the house to keep out the winds and the view to the Southern Alps was non-existent.

HOPE School Country Fair: Sat 23rd Sept 10-2, 316 Paton Rd. Silent Auction, produce, preserves, plants, dry. Fortunately there is a spring fed stream running through the gardens in a series of ponds which brings essential moisture and a variety of birds.
As Penny says ‘‘a garden should never be static’’ and over the years she has tried to establish what grows best, and where. For example natives have been more difficult to establish than exotics but now they are flourishing in the native woodland.
