Penny, and her husband John began establishi­ng the garden at Flaxmere, North Canterbury over 50 years ago.

Situated at 1000 feet above sea level tall trees hugged the house to keep out the winds and the view to the Southern Alps was non-existent.

As Penny says ‘‘a garden should never be static’’ and over the years she has tried to establish what grows best, and where. For example natives have been more difficult to establish than exotics but now they are flourishin­g in the native woodland.
